Continue to adoption forms
We bassets are well-known for our mild temperament, and we are notoriously good around children. But we're still dogs, and some of us just don't get along with very small kids that might tug at us, or pull our ears, or put their face up close to ours... especially when we've just been placed into a strange, new environment.  Heck, some of our rescue bassets have been bounced around between so many shelters, homes, vets, and kennels that they're gonna need a little space and adjustment time before you let the kids go whole hog with us. Our rescue volunteers do as best as they can to evaluate each rescue basset's temperament. But we ask if you have very small children... before you adopt any dog of any breed, be prepared to not only train the dog, but to also train your children on how to handle us! Also be prepared to supervise us at all times when we're together, especially in the first few months when we're trying to settle into our forever home. Thank you-arooooooooo!!!!!To read all about introducing a new dog to the children in your home, here are some links to some articles on the internet:

Yes, I have the patience

No, I am NOT willing to train my dog in basic manners

Do you understand that even mild-mannered basset hounds might not get along with very small kids that pester them, such as pulling on their ears, putting their face up close to the dog's face and waking the dog up abruptly... especially when the basset has just been placed into a strange, new environment? Are you prepared and willing to train your children on how to handle the basset and to supervise them at all times when they are together, especially in the first few months when the dog is trying to settle into your home?

Are you prepared to train your children to not disturb the dog while it is eating and/or chewing on a chew-toy? Yes No

(Thank you... arooooo!!!)

Below, check each statement that you agree to.

If you do NOT agree to any ONE of the statements, please provide explanation in the box at the end of this list.

I am prepared to make a reasonable commitment of time and effort, and to affect scheduling and lifestyle changes in order to make the relationship with my basset hound work.

I am prepared to make sure my dog is not exposed to the elements of weather without proper shelter, shade cover, dry ground, and access to fresh water.

I am prepared to provide appropriate and timely veterinary care for the life of my dog including a minimum of spending approx. $200 per year on vaccinations and heartworm preventative.

I am prepared to provide my dog with the proper nutrition for optimum health, and to keep my dog the proper weight, neither obese nor emaciated

I am prepared to keep this dog indoors at night, and to include him/her in the activities of the household while we are home, as much as possible

I am prepared to keep my dog groomed (particularly inside my basset's ears and paws) and free of external parasites and matting

I am prepared to give my dog ample aerobic exercise daily, and make sure that at least three times a week he gets to run and play and get tired out.

I am prepared to provide my dog with enough training and/or behavioral management so as to enable him to be a welcome part of my community, or managed safely

I am prepared to provide my dog with enough toys to satisfy his urge to chew

I am prepared to do everything I can to keep my dog from becoming a nuisance in my community

I am prepared to not allow him to run free/out of my control, chase cars, bicycles, children, etc.

If I have to move residences for any reason, I am aware that finding housing that accepts pets can take longer than average, but that I will commit to moving with my dog, as I would move with a member of my family.

I am prepared that if, for any reason, I can no longer keep this dog, I will not abandon this dog

I will return the dog to the rescue (if required) or leave ample time to find a new, appropriate home, tell the new owners truthfully all the dog's behaviors, good and bad, and follow up occasionally to make sure the dog is safe and content.

If you left any of the above boxes unchecked, please explain why here:
